Hey Y'all, I don't know if you have noticed but the weather has recently taken a dramatic shift from warm, dry, and sunny days to cool, cloudy, and rainy. As farmers we always welcome the gift of rain and a break from the sun, but this cold spell especially as spring is headed into summer, has basically put all crops on hold. The lack of heat and solar food has all crops just sitting there and waiting with minimal growth. All the summer crops are being hardened off from the easy life of the greenhouse and will hopefully be transplanted to our new farm field the end of this week or beginning of the next. We continue to plant our direct seeded successions in the field and weed the first crops. The hoophouse is completely planted to tomatoes both red slicing and about 7 heirloom varieties. Living so in tune with the weather truly allows us to get the sense of the place we call home. Being outside everyday and all day long allows us to see and feel the changes and how that translates to the crops growing and the rhythm of the farm. It is a beautiful thing to then be able to bring that sense of place to our members and customers as we discuss the season and how it is progressing and what to expect from the coming harvests. So hopefully this cool and wet weather will break up so that we can get some growth on these crops and get them to your table! This weekend at market we should have some spinach, tons of arugula, and possibly collards and kale from our spring plantings. We will also most likely be bring some plant starts for sale as well! See you at market, Nic |
