We for sure took it on the head this past Wednesday night and at both locations oddly enough. Over two inches of rain and severe pea size hail has shredded our fields much like what happened two years ago nearly to the day June 7th 2009 and June 8 this year. Today we are walking the fields and will begin to replant, reseed, and retool our planting plan for the fields. Some plants will not make it and others we will trim and then nurse them back into health to begin harvesting in a week or two. On a broader scale these storms make us think about this place about what it means to farm here for our community and how we can better mitigate this obvious risk. We are working on a plan for next year to better deal with these risks. Some favorite lines of poetry come to be in these stressful times... "Make the human race a better head. Make the world a better piece of ground." ~ Wendell Berry Hope to see you at market soon, Nic |
