Rain and big numbers

posted Apr 21, 2011 6:17 AM by Nic Koontz
I love this light rain we are getting, don't you? It is a beautiful thing. I had forgotten what it sounded and felt like as well as what mud was like to work in. In farm news all of our first and second rotations are germinating beautifully in the field. They will soon be upon your kitchen table in all their fresh delicious glory! We just seeded a large portion of one field to summer peas that will only be a cover crop before we plant fall csa stuff there. The peas will suppress weeds, hold moisture and soil in place, and fix nitrogen right before we plow them in before planting. It will be a beautiful thing that we are excited to be able to do this year.

I was just out in the allium field the other day and did some math. As we grow more each year the numbers get bigger, very big at least for us. We put in only a few beds of onions, shallots, cippolinis, and leeks but with our tight spacing that adds up to around 25,000 little plants. That is a lot of food! Now I just need to figure out who's barn we are going to cure all these in......

See you at market!
Nic

We will be at the Drake Road Farmers Market this Saturday from 10am-1pm with tasty spring offerings of salad mix, rainbow swiss chard, kale, spinach, and radishes.

I normally wouldn't tell anyone to skip market, but this Saturday I have been asked to participate in a community issues forum put on by State Representatives John Kefalas and Roger Wilson. There will be a handful of panelists like myself who are engaged in various sustainable initiatives, we will be open for questions, gripes, and comments!

Community Issues Forum, "Local Efforts to Increase a Sustainable Ft Collins" The event will be held from 10:15 AM until 11:45 AM this Saturday, April 23 at the Council Tree Library (2733 Council Tree Ave)
