4.9.10 Hurry up and wait.

This week has found us out in the field working and getting the fields prepped and spring seeds in. That also means finding out what little things have broke over the winter, such as little things on the irrigation system , tractor, and farm truck all in one day. You need to wear many hats these days as a farmer.

The eggplants are up and running with peppers not far behind and we have already seeded our second succession of head lettuce transplants in the greenhouse. We will be "chitting" the seed potatoes soon and planting them out along with the alliums(onions, shallots, leeks). The garlic is also up and looking great after hiding under the mulch all year. We have upwards of 6 varieties of this essential and tasty culinary ingredient.

April on the vegetable farm is the time of hurry up and wait. The warm days here on the front range bring us all out of dormancy but there is still over a month(or more) of potential heavy frost, snows, etc. ahead of us. So you get done what you can but also need to hold off on seeding things that need to wait a bit even though the days feel like summer. If you just can't wait any longer for spring greens, head on over to the Food Co-Op to pick up some overwintered spinach or have some daily greens at Tasty Harmony.
