4.2 As the soil warms.....

Spring time on the farm is definitely a lesson in patience. As the weather warms and the days lengthen our instinct as farmers is to plant, sow, cultivate, and feed people. We say, let's go!.....but wait this is the rocky mountain high desert and winter is not over yet by a long shot or maybe it is this year. Those warm sunny days mask the intermittent snow storms, nightly freezes, and constant wind and oh yeah, lack of plentiful irrigation water. This little detail of water hinges all of our decisions as to when and what to plant.

Field work finally began on Wednesday as peas, both snap and snow went in. Our greenhouse is bursting at the seams with little plants waiting for their moment in the field. The soil in the field has improved drastically from last year in all aspects after a year of care and stewarding. For all you folks waiting for fresh food the seeds we are sowing now are targeted to be ready for harvest mid-late May. But that harvest is our plan, not necessarily what Mother Nature has planned. Patience and the ability to work within the limits set by the place are tenets of good farming, and we as farmers are learning that every day.

Happy Spring,
Nic
