Hey Folks, We created this farm journal for everyone to stay updated to happenings on the farm in between newsletters. So check back on an irregularly regular basis to see what is growing and going on. Well spring is upon the Rockies and we all know that means wind, wild temperature swings, and 24 hour wet snow dumps. The new north three quarter acre field was plowed a couple weeks ago. Since it is a new field we will mostly be growing all of our summer crops out there like field tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, squash, cucumbers, eggplant, and peppers on drip irrigation. The farm crew just finished getting the large coldframe up, so we now have a 30' by 100' protected growing space that will allows up to manage some of the hail risk and do some serious season extension. With a 12' high peak we can trellis all those tasty heirloom tomatoes and nurture them along to ripening earlier and better than if they were grown in the field. This is a passively heated structure, so no heaters or fans or anything. The sides roll up and the large barn type doors open for ventilation and the plants grow in the ground. I just checked the garlic this morning and the little shoots are pushing their way up through the winter mulch. The greenhouse is just about full and we are having to get creative with seedings. Today I will be potting up the coldframe tomatoes and seeding pac choi, kohlrabi, and everyone's favorite kale. This next week the peas go in along with some quick greens in the coldframe. We hope to have some tasty spring greens for mid to late march at Beaver's Market Stand as well as Drake Rd. Farmers market. Well its off to the greenhouse. Cheers, Nic |
