2012 Fall CSA shares are open! Sign up soon to secure a spot in the fall bounty! We are very excited to offer our 2012 Fall CSA this year in order to compliment the Market CSA season and allow better access to locally grown goodness throughout the year. What? 2012 Native Hill Farm Fall CSA! Why? Since our ~24 week outdoor market season ends in Late October and we know you all keep eating past then we have decided to offer a traditional share based CSA for 8 weeks in the Fall. This will also allows us to grow some of the longer season storage crops which are not economically viable to grow for market and will be available long after markets are over. So if you sign up for both CSA that could be 32 weeks of fresh produce! How much? The 8 week share will cost $250 which is $31 per week. Based on member feedback we are designing this share so that it will allow you to enjoy fresh local foods until Christmas on week by week bases. So this share will provide you enough produce to use that week for fresh winter salads, soups, roasts, etc. What kind of Produce? We will focus the share on: Fresh Greens(Head Lettuce, Salad Mix, Arugula, Braising Mix, Spinach, Kale, Swiss Chard, Collard Greens), Carrots, Winter Squash, Garlic, Onions, and Potatoes(both sweet and regular) And Since Variety is the spice of life these veggies will make an appearance from time to time: Rutabaga, Turnips, Broccoli, Cabbage(green, red, napa) Winter Squash, Onions, Parsnips, Brussels Sprouts, Radishes, Beets, Celeriac, Radicchio, Fennel, Pac Choi, Jerusalem Artichoke/Sunchokes, Leeks, Kohlrabi and some hearty culinary herbs How are you gonna grow it? We plan to have a diverse crop mix already planted and grown up in the field as we head into the fall. While most of the stuff will be harvested fresh from the field the day before pick up. We are also planning to harvest and wash and then store in our root cellar certain crops as colder winter weather threatens. We will also be using fabric row cover to allow for fresh harvests from the field, well into winter for certain crops. We also have large hoop houses which will be planted in greens so we can harvest fresh greens all the way up till Christmas. When? We plan to start up the Fall CSA The week of October 29th(the week after the outdoor markets are over) and have pickups for 8 weeks until the week of December 19 just before the holidays start and winter weather starts in earnest. We are shooting for a Wednesday pickup from 430-730pm. Where? We will do a pick-up(bring some bags/boxes) at a CSA members house or central Old Town Ft. Collins Location. Location to be determined once the Fall CSA is filled. How does the Pick up work? Is it different than the Summer Market CSA? Yes it is a bit different than the Summer Market CSA that some of you are familiar with. The Fall CSA will be a traditional CSA where members get a pre-determined amount of produce and must pick up each week to get their produce. The pick ups will be set up "like a market" where everything is in bulk bins and there is a chalk board with the amount(lbs, bunch, quart, etc) each member gets of each type of produce. If you don't want potatoes that week and don't have a place to store them and just don't like parsnips grab them and put them on the share table and pick up what you like from that table. That way nothing gets wasted. We try to design the Fall CSA with a correct amount of food for folks and with the right mix of crops to please everyone. That being said, it is up to you to be adventurous in the kitchen and try some new things, we will send out recipes more weekly this year to help you with some of the unfamiliar veggies in the share. With the weekly email and at the pick up we can give you storage tips to keep the harvest as fresh as possible in your refrigerator. Sounds Delicous!
